The Reading Class
The Junior Reading Class at Holy Family Senior School is a specialist class for students with severe Specific Learning Difference /Dyslexia who are in 3rd or 4th class. It is a two-year specialised programme that provides a secure, supportive, strength -based environment where pupils can learn at their own pace and use methods that suit their learning styles. The pupil-teacher ratio of this class is 9:1. Applications for enrolment are open from the beginning of January each year until the end of March. School transport may be sanctioned by the NCSE for students who are accepted to attend the Reading Class.
In order to be eligible to attend the Reading Class, pupils must :
- have a formal written diagnosis of severe Specific Learning Disability/ Dyslexia by a psychologist
- score on or below the 2nd percentile in one of the following areas: spelling, comprehension or reading
- be presenting with SLD/ Dyslexia
- have a psychological report that is less than 2 years old
- have a general cognitive ability (IQ) in the average or above average range as assessed by a psychologist
- have a significant discrepancy between ability (IQ) and performance
